</p><p>Yes indeed, nearly nine months after the “surprise of a life”, it was time to venture over to Guam to see my generation’s first grandchild. Isaac was born less than four weeks earlier and was growing like a bamboo shoot, and we didn’t want to miss getting to know him before he learned how to get himself into trouble.
</p><p>It took three flights to get there, Boise to San Francisco, San Francisco to Hawaii, Hawaii to Guam. Eighteen hours in all, most of in the air. We left Saturday morning and arrived Sunday evening, all without ever seeing a sunrise or a sunset thanks to the International Date Line. Guam is 18 hours ahead of us; in fact, it’s the first place that every day begins for the United States, for the vast majority of the world for that matter. The day Isaac was born I was able to tell my friends that my grandson was born tomorrow. Not too many grandparents can say that!

Yes indeed, nearly nine months after the “surprise of a life”, it was time to venture over to Guam to see my generation’s first grandchild. Isaac was born less than four weeks earlier and was growing like a bamboo shoot, and we didn’t want to miss getting to know him before he learned how to get himself into trouble.

It took three flights to get there, Boise to San Francisco, San Francisco to Hawaii, Hawaii to Guam. Eighteen hours in all, most of in the air. We left Saturday morning and arrived Sunday evening, all without ever seeing a sunrise or a sunset thanks to the International Date Line. Guam is 18 hours ahead of us; in fact, it’s the first place that every day begins for the United States, for the vast majority of the world for that matter. The day Isaac was born I was able to tell my friends that my grandson was born tomorrow. Not too many grandparents can say that!

<p style=”background: #f2ebda;”><img src=”http://www.goclimbarock.net/blog/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/072214_0251_Guam20145.jpg” alt=”” align=”left” />Lynette and I never did shake our habit of getting up with the sun, so we ventured out in the mornings for a walk around the neighborhood. We spotted a pair of snails racing across the road and had to laugh. Soon after that we started noticing the splat marks in the road that must have been other racing snails with bad timing.</p>
