I headed out on Friday of the Labor Day weekend towards the Thompson River where I was to meet David Bayes, Gary Kinney, Dwayne Bayes for another weekend of floating down the Thompson River in B.C. Canada. Along the way, I stopped in George Washington for an ice cream only to find that Dave Matthews was playing right next door at the Gorge. I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to see my favorite band so I bought a ticket from a guy who was trying to get rid of an extra he had and headed down to the amphitheater.
After a fantastic concert, and a surprising reminder that pot is now legal in Washington… the place was literally smoking! I continued my drive north.

Somewhere near Logan Lake, the sun began lighting things up so I had to get out to take some pictures and wake up a little.

I was surprised to see a huge open pit mine along the way. This is the Tech Highland Valley mine. The Largest open pit copper mine in Canada. It may not look that impressive in this photo, because there’s nothing to give it perspective.

I pulled into Ashcroft and found the campground just as everyone was finishing up breakfast. We loaded up the van and headed for the put-in.

This trip is traditionally done in canoes, but this year everyone elected to ride sit-on-top kayaks. I brought an inflatable from Boise. The water was so warm as it flowed out of the top of Kamloops Lake. I didn’t bring my camera on the first day, because I wasn’t sure if I could keep it dry. So that’s all we get for now.

The next morning, before everyone else got up, David’s mom and I took a photo walk around Ashcroft.

The one thing about Ashcroft is the trains… it’s a major train route across Canada and they pass by on both sides of the river several times an hour. Ear plugs make sleep much easier!

Monday morning, I got up just before sunrise, and made the long drive back to Boise. It was a great weekend with a group of great people!
